Libraries Specialized on Michael Servetus
There are some libraries in the world with significant collections
of books written on and by Servetus. Most of them were originated
as a donation from singular personalities that, somehow, were
passionate and admirers of the Servetus personality and legacy.
This section aims to compile these places in order to support
the search for any reference on Servetus. There are links
to the web sites and from there you may start to search for
availability. If you know of other libraries that should be
listed here you may contact us and send your comments.
The Historical Collection was established in 1929 in association
with the Institute of the History of Medicine, which occupies
the top floor of the William H. Welch Medical Library. The
rare book collection consists largely of gifts received by
the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. An important collection
of books by and about Michael Servetus was the gift of Leonard
Mackall, a noted Baltimore bibliophile, especialist on the
history of medicine and close friend of Sir William Osler.
The Osler Library is Canada's foremost scholarly resource
in the history of medicine, and one of the most important
libraries of its type in North America. The nucleus of the
Library is the collection of 8,000 rare and historic works
on the history of medicine and allied subjects presented to
the Faculty of Medicine by Sir William Osler (1849 - 1919).
Since the opening of the Library in 1929, the collection has
continued to grow by purchase, gift, and transfer (particularly,
in the latter case, of older books from the Health Sciences
Library).
The Osler Library has a large collection of books on and by
Servetus bequethed by William Osler.
The IESMS Library is Spain’s main resource in Servetus
Books. It is housed in the Instituto de Estudios Sijenenses
located at the Servetus House in Villanueva de Sijena. This
Instituto was created in 1975 by the schollar Julio P. Arribas
Salaberry with the goal of promoting the Servetus Heritage
as well as other historical assets of the region (Monasterio
Real de Santa María de Sijena). The book collection
consists largely of a donation by Julio P. Arribas plus acquisitions
performed by the Instituto during the last years.
The University's present Medical Library was founded in 1941,
largely due to the efforts of Dr. Harvey Cushing and two other
renowned medical specialists, Dr. Arnold C. Klebs and Dr.
John F. Fulton. Calling themselves "The Trinitarians",
these three great figures of twentieth-century medicine gave
their extensive library collections to Yale to form the nucleus
of one of the great medical historical libraries of the world.
Dr. Cushing, neurosurgeon and collector of the works of the
early anatomists and surgeons; Dr Klebs, physician, bibliographer,
and incunabulist; and Dr. Fulton, physiologist and collector
of medical literature, spearheaded the development of medical
history as a major field of study and made a significant contribution
to the understanding of medicine and the history of culture.
The British Library Public Catalogue (BLPC) is a web interface
to the main British Library catalogues. The catalogues are
divided between material available in our Reading Rooms and
that available for remote supply as photocopies or loans.
You can search all catalogues, all of the modern (post-1975)
reference material together, all of the Document Supply material
together, or an individual catalogue. If you know that an
item will be found in only one catalogue, it will usually
be quicker to select only that catalogue. There is also an
order facility for customers to order loans and photocopies
of material held by the British Library Document Supply Centre
(BLDSC). Through our standard and rush services, we can deliver
photocopies around the world by mail, fax or Ariel®. For
some services, registration is required.
